Some hours of fun - a whole day of suffering

I'm always amazed at how one ALWAYS prefers the fun of a lot of drinks at night well knowing the next day is going to be hell...

2 glasses of Sangria
1 beer
1 glass of Sangria
2 cups of Sake
1 Tequila shot
2 bottles of beer
1 cup of sparkling wine
1 Tequila shot
1 Kamikaze

I'm sure the last drink was bad! So much fun to celebrate my new job in costumes last night - almost made up for the fact that Karneval happens without me this year - the hangover today is terrible though... But hey, the memory of Jan's disco ball earrings, Steven with the pink wig, dancing all night and having a great time will stay; the hangover is gone tomorrow.

Denn wenn et Troemmelche jeit

This is the text of one of my favourite Karneval songs, if you ever go to Cologne for Carneval, you'll learn it no matter if you speak German or not. It's in all the bars, all the parties, on the street, in the subway, it's EVERYWHERE!

Jedes Johr em Winter, wenn et widder schneit,
kütt dr Fastelovend un mir sin all bereit.
All de kölsche Jecke süht mr op dr Stroß,
selvs dr kleenste Panz dä weiss
jetzt jeit et widder loss.

Denn wenn et Trömmelche jeit,
denn stonn mer all parat
un mer trekke durch die Stadt
un jeder hätt jesaat
Kölle Alaaf, Alaaf - Kölle Alaaf

Jo am 11.11. jeit dat Spillche loss,
denn dann weed dr Aap jemaht,
ejal wat et och koss.
De Oma jeit nom Pfandhaus,
versetzt et letzte Stöck
denn dr Fastelovend es fuer sie et jrößte Jlöck.

Denn wenn et Trömmelche jeit,...

Next year I won't miss out on Carneval for sure!

President's Day

When you start the day with a nice Bloody Mary in the sunshine, you're set up for a fun day! Did not at all plan to drive to Salem today, ended up there anyway and had a great time. Not that the witch museum would have been any scary (quite disappointing I have to say!), but finding this wonderful candy store made up for it completely. Driving back we had to stop here...

Just impossible to drive by that sign!
Filled up with steak is just a great way to finish President's day!

Deadwood

So this friend of Jan gave us 7 DVDs with one season of "Deadwood". Quite addictive! Though I really need the subtitles. Lots of words I've never heard before. Probably not the most upscale, artsy language out there, but definitely a lot of fun to watch!

Words to add to my GRE list of vocabulary:
- cocksucker (probably one of the most frequently used words, except "fucking")
- hoople-head
- cunt
- ...

Foreign movie night

Finally found my bunch of AIESEC-like people here... And of course it was through Yasmine, the girl who's researching nomadism.

She brought over Ab from Morocco and there we were, having foreign movie night at his place, people from Argentina, Mexico, Germany, Bulgaria, Morocco, France, Brazil and Colombia. Conversations about traveling to remote places, funny jobs people do, jokes about cultural things, eating food from all around the world, people bringing their favorite French wine, and a group of 25 people actually watching a foreign movie at the end of the night...

Feels like AIESEC, made me really happy!

Valentine's day - great for people watching

Jan and I went out to a bar and a jazz club last night and it was just hilarious to watch people in both places...

It actually started on the way to those places; everyone was walking around with huge boxes filled with long-stem roses and other really bulky items that must just be annoying as hell to carry around. But hey, it's Valentine's day, girls seem to either be annoyed because they don't get such a bulky thing, or because they do get it and their date isn't gentlemen enough to carry it for them. Probably because they spent way too much money on something they didn't even want to spend the money on in the first place, just out of fear their honey is going to be upset when their flowers/gifts can't compete with honey's coworker's valentine's day achievements...

So with this slight tension in place the next step is bringing your honey to a really expensive restaurant where you then save on tip (see Connie's story), to not let expenses get completely out of control. As this is valentine's day, you can't just go home after dinner of course and that's why Jan and I had so much fun watching people last night.

After some awesome dinner at home:

First scene: Charlie's kitchen
Charlie's kitchen is a mix of a diner and a dive bar, with a slight feel of Tortilla flats, they have Miller High Life signs on the walls, are decorated with lots of neon lights but serve decent diner food and quite cheap beer. Usually a fun college kid hangout. Last night however, it was people watching heaven: The girls to our left, bitching about valentine's day all night and gossiping about all their ex dates, probably because they didn't score a date for that night - well, they made up with pitchers of beer and fries and added to our entertainment. To our right, a fresh date, having some very serious discussions about family relationships, holding hands all the time, giving each other air kisses and being so focused on each other that nothing could get their attention. Actually probably the nicest couple we've seen that night, except that they didn't seem to laugh at all...

Too bad we had to move on quickly...

Second venue: The Regatta bar
I was quite skeptical about that one I have to admit. It's one of Boston's most famous jazz clubs, but always had this "old people's hangout who take jazz much too serious and forget about the fun of it" feel to me. But hey, the band was good, so we went anyways. And it was GREAT people watching again. They seat you at tables of 4 and we were paired with this really funny couple to watch. Probably about 20 years old - at least that was our interpretation of them ordering sparkling water to drink (or he was really cheap and didn't want to spend any money there). For half the show they actually focused on filling each other's glasses with the right amount of water. She was obviously not interested in jazz at all, and he probably just wanted to impress her with an upscale place. Too bad they ran out of water (should have gotten the large bottle, not the small one) halfway through the show at which point there was really no excuse for her anymore to spend more time in the bar and they had to leave. Well, a better view for us on the stage...
To our right, equally entertaining, young girl with really old date. With them it was more the other way around, while she LOVED the show, he was obviously bored and much more interested in touching and kissing her... They had to leave half way through the show because it was probably time to go to a place they could have wild sex all night... Made us think what it is that fascinated her with him, maybe he was rich...

Well, with both those couples gone we could focus on the music, which was really great. Smooth Brazilian jazz with the Vinicius Cantuaria Quintet, too bad that most of the people there didn't come for the music…

Food Heaven

We've done it again. Drive somewhere in Cambridge without a map. That usually ends in disaster, because none of the streets are parallel and you always get lost if you don't know exactly where you're going. Even worse, when your car's heating doesn't work anymore since our radio got stolen... But this time we were lucky, we happened to find this restaurant I heard about and just decided to get some quick dinner, ask for directions and warm up.

Sitting at the bar we were kind of shocked about the prices, but the food was so amazing it was worth every single penny spent on it!

They cook Middle Eastern / Mediterranean food and everything we tried was outstanding. So if you're ever looking for a place to have dinner here in Cambridge, go to Oleana and indulge in taste, spice and flavors! Soooooooo good! Need to find work soon to be able to afford going there much more often! :-)

Go away flu!

There are two things in the world I would LOVE to get rid of. Getting the flu and mosquitos. They kind of neatly split the year in half, while one is in season the other one doesn't bother me that much...

Wanted to go for Petra's birthday party tonight, guess this is not going to happen... :-(((

The much wanted US drivers license

In Germany there are lots of jokes about people trying to get a cheap license in the US and then transfer it to Germany. The thing is, it doesn't work that easily because Germans know Americans can't drive...

As everything works on a ‘I treat you like you treat me’ basis in international stuff, German drivers licenses aren't just transferable to the US either. It can't be based on the belief Germans can't drive, at least not from my experience with my road test yesterday. It must be some form of "I know you can drive, but we have to give you some shit for not accepting our licenses in Germany."

So funny, the guy sat in our car and looked at my application, and then he goes "so you have a German drivers license?"; "yes, Sir"; "ok, then let's just drive around the block". He let me drive exactly once around the block, just enough time for him to fill out the information on my learner’s permit. That's it; passed the road test in less than 2 minutes...

Two ways to interpret this:
EITHER: He believes it’s bullshit to make Germans do their license again here in the US and it’s really not worth checking if I can drive or not - he has never met a German license holder not being able to drive anyways...
OR This is the way road tests are done here in the US, in which case it makes total sense that nobody can drive...
